Desinfection with Electrolysis

The nt-CLE system is the result of several decades of research, development and continuous improvement. We have already built systems that produce 0.5 up to 120 kg/h (NaClO active component) per electrolysis unit on site. The concentration is up to 0.8% sodium hypochlorite. The systems are engineered, built, installed and delivered ready-to-use, provided with the necessary training, and are customised according to the needs of the customer.

In addition to the large nt-CLE systems, Newtec also developped the compact series AqualityBox® for salt water electrolysis with capacities ranging from 3, 6, 30, 60 up to 200 g/h.

Applications for salt and sea water electrolysis

Salt water electrolysis with nt-CLE systems is mainly used in large water works, cooling towers, industrial process water plants, water treatment plants and in agriculture. The AqualityBox® system is used in small cooling towers, wet separators, green houses and in plumming systems of large buildings to treat Legionella contamination.

Sea water electrolysis with nt-CLE-S systems is developped for large cooling towers in power or chemical plants on shore, for sea water desalination for LNG stations and sea water swimming pools.

Electrolysis Process

The nt-CLE systems use membraneless electrolysis tube cells and produce a sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) solution with a concentration of up to 0.8% for the active component. According to EU Regulation 1272/2008 (CLP), NaClO concentrations below 1% are not hazardous and are biodegradable.

For the production of 1 kg NaClO, approx. 3.5 kg NaCl (salt) and 4 kW electrical power is needed. During the electrolysis process a calculated volume of 0.35 l hydrogen is produced. The actual hydrogen emissions are far below this value. The internal ventilation system supplies a large amount of fresh air into the storage tank to dilute the hydrogen and is designed to cope with the calculated volume of produced hydrogen (up to a safe concentration) for maximum safety.

There are basically two variants for electrolysis:

  • Salt water electrolysis using salt and water
  • Sea water electrolysis using the natural salinity of the sea water.

Salt water electrolysis

The salt water electrolysis systems nt-CLE consist of a water softener, a brine tank, an electrolysis unit with rectifier, a product tank, metering pump and controls.

Capacity of the nt-CLE for salt water electrolysis: 0,5 to 40 kg/h per electrolysis unit.

Concentration of the on-site produced NaClO solution: 0,5% to 0,8% active component NaClO.

Consumption per kg NaClO: to 3,5 kg NaCl, 4 kWh

Sea water electrolysis

The sea water electrolysis systems nt-CLE consist of submersible pumps, self-cleaning filters, an electrolysis unit with rectifier, a product tank, metering pumps and controls.

Capacity of the nt-CLE-S series for sea water electrolysis: 0,5 to 120 kg/h per electrolysis unit.

Concentration of the on-site produced NaClO solution: up to 0,25% active component NaClO.

Consumption per kg NaClO: up to 4 kWh, no salt.

On-site electrolysis: advantages

Since 2000, Newtec has continuously improved the membraneless tubular cell electrolysis in order to achieve a maximum customer satisfaction and has adapted the technology to comply to the changing legislation in various countries, by its own research, development and experience from more than 200 projects worldwide.

Main advantages

  • Inexpensive on-site production of the active chlorine component; minimal by-products such as chlorates through optimisation of electrolysis parameters; high effectiveness through immediate use.
  • Compliant with the new EU biocide directive (No 528/2012), further product certification of the nt-CLE series are in process.
  • The modern and flexible design can address all customer requirements.
  • Highest quality according to German standards, with 5 year warranty for electrodes.
  • Saving up to 20% of the electrolysis energy through integrated heat exchangers.
  • Sensor monitored and PLC controlled automatic process with visualization of the overall process and logging of all important parameters and alarm signals.

Safety

The electrolysis nt-CLE systems are our solution to replace the dangerous liquid chlorine disinfection systems. Transport, storage, handling and dosage of drums with liquid chlorine gas are subjected to the highest hazardous class. Serious accidents during transport, storage, handling, dosage and maintenance are happening all the time.
